FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most important questions about flight compensation.

Where can I find my flight number?

The flight number consists of the 2 digit code of the airline and a 2-to-4 digit code of the flight. You can find the flight number on your booking confirmation or your boarding pass.

Example: The flight number EW 9049 is the flight 9049 from Eurowings.

What costs will I incur?

You will only incur costs once we have successfully claimed your compensation. A small percentage of your compensation will be deducted as commission.

How long can I claim my compensation?

The limitation period is governed by the German Civil Code (BGB). In Germany, you can claim compensation for flights retroactively for up to 3 years. You are therefore welcome to submit older cases to us.

Can I also submit claims for other passengers?

Yes, you can submit claims for all persons affected. This also applies if you were not a passenger yourself.
Compensation is always entitled to the traveller themselves. This is important if the trip was booked and paid for by someone else.

What documents are required?

To review your case, we initially only need a document that proves that you booked the flight in question. This can be either the booking confirmation or the boarding pass. You can upload the document as an image or PDF via our user portal.

How long does it take until I receive my compensation?

It usually takes around 3 months from submitting your claim to receiving your compensation. However, depending on the individual case and special circumstances, the period may be longer. We will keep you updated on the status of your case.

Your Rights in Case of a Flight Delay

Every traveller wants to avoid flight delays, but that's not always possible. Fortunately, there's the possibility of receiving compensation from the airline if you're affected by a delayed flight.

In the EU, the rights of air passengers are regulated by the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004. This regulation grants passengers comprehensive rights in cases of both flight cancellations and delays. Below, we clarify which claims you have and how much the flight compensation can be.

When Can You Demand Compensation?

If a flight is delayed, affected parties want to know how many hours of delay entitle them to compensation. The short answer is: as soon as you arrive more than 3 hours late at the destination airport.

The amount of compensation depends on the distance of your flight:

Flight Distance Example Amount of Compensation
Short distance (up to 1,500 kilometers) Berlin - Munich 250 euros per person
Medium distance (1,500 to 3,500 kilometers) Berlin - Madrid 400 euros per person
Long distance (over 3,500 kilometers) Berlin - New York 600 euros per person

For Which Flights Does the Regulation Apply?

These regulations cover all flights where the departure airport is in the EU. They also apply to flights where the destination airport is in the EU, provided that the airline is also based in the EU. Therefore, a delayed flight from Istanbul to Berlin with Turkish Airlines is not covered by EU law.

How Long Do You Have to Claim for Delayed Flights?

In Germany, the limitation period for claims is 3 years (see § 195 BGB). This also applies to claims from flight delays. The limitation period ends on December 31 of the respective year.

Example: If your flight in July 2023 was delayed by more than 3 hours, you can claim compensation from the airline until December 31, 2026.

What Other Rights Do You Have in Case of Flight Delays?

The right to compensation is just one of your rights in case of flight delays. Already while you are waiting, the airline must offer you food and drink free of charge after a certain waiting time. You can insist on receiving such services from the airline after the following waiting times:

  • Short distance: From 2 hours of departure delay
  • Medium distance: From 3 hours of departure delay
  • Long distance: From 4 hours of departure delay

If your flight has been postponed to the next day, you can demand accommodation in a hotel. The airline must bear the costs and also pay for the transport to and from the hotel.

Moreover, you can withdraw from your flight if you have to wait more than 5 hours. In this case, you can demand a refund of the entire ticket price.

When Are You Not Entitled to Compensation?

There are situations in which you have no right to compensation from the airline. This is the case when the airline is not at fault for the delay. This is always the case when so-called extraordinary circumstances have caused the delay.

Extraordinary circumstances include, among other things:

  • Strikes by ground staff (except strikes by the airline's own staff)
  • Severe weather conditions
  • Natural disasters like earthquakes
  • Political circumstances like terror threats

In such cases, the airline does not have to make compensation payments. However, these circumstances do not affect your right to receive snacks and drinks during long waiting times.

Note: Airlines often use the argument of extraordinary circumstances to avoid paying compensation. However, they are only exempted from paying compensation if they can prove that they have examined all other possibilities to get you to your destination as quickly as possible. This includes flights with other airlines or transport with other means of transport such as buses or trains.

Therefore, do not hesitate to submit your case to us, even if the airline cites "extraordinary circumstances". We have extensive data sets that help us determine whether you have a claim for compensation.

What To Do In Case Of A Flight Delay?

If you are affected by a flight delay, you should document the problem as well as possible for a later claim. This increases the chances that the airline will later pay compensation.

Therefore, follow these tips:

  • Get the reason for the delay confirmed in writing by the airline staff.
  • Keep all receipts for expenses you incur during the waiting period.
  • Insist on your right to receive food and drink from the airline if the waiting times are very long.
  • Submit your case to us as soon as possible so that we can check your claim for compensation and enforce it.
